The scene is a fairly common one: a group of women are gathered in the home of one, clothing strung on every surface as they all argue and debate the pros and cons of each choice. This one is too short and shows too much leg. That one is too low and has too much cleavage. This one is the absolute wrongest color ever. The women argue about whether the wearer should be showing off any skin at all and if so, how much is the right amount, walking the line between flirty and wrong? Given the choice between dressing for a job interview and a first date, most women would choose the interview as less stressful.
After all, a woman's wardrobe is judged by a more strenuous criteria than that of a man, at least in most cases. Men can dress casually, (jeans and a nice shirt) or a little dressier (a suit) or some variation of the two and he will be fine. A woman on the other hand, has to dress so that she looks like she is interested in the guy but not desperate and that can be tricky, a delicate balance between virtue and vixen. If she dresses too conservatively, she is unlikely to catch the eye of her date. If she dresses too provocatively, he may not take her seriously or may try to take some presumptive liberties with her.
It is not always what she wears that can be tricky though. Hairstyle, makeup, perfume and even nail polish color can all send weird messages to her date, even if most people assume that men do not notice that kind of thing. They may not notice when they are perfect, but one messed up nail and he may think that you are careless or worse.
Certain women have to walk the line even more carefully. A large breasted woman may have to wear a looser top so that she does not call attention to her attributes too much. A woman with a larger lower half might have the same issue with jeans or other types of pants. What would be delicate and demure on one body type might be too blatant on another. That is why the women gather in groups so that they can vote on the dating outfit, trying on a multitude of options, turning around in front of mirrors and friends, hoping for the perfect dress that will make them look taller, thinner and whatever else they might be trying to be for the evening.
